During Winter Break

                  -Volunteer or Work:  Break this year is very long and during that time you can earn some money or volunteer some hours during the holiday season.  This will be a fun way to keep the boredom away!

                  -Buy Books:  With that hard earned money you can now get ready to purchase books for the Spring semester.  Click on the following link to find out what books you need and how to purchase them through the CO-OP Book Store. http://www.iupstore.com/textbooks-and-course-materials

                  -Supplies: Email your professors to see if there is any specific supplies you need to have for that class so you can buy them ahead of time and be prepared for that class.

Reasons to Take a Course during Winter Session

 

Lighter Course Load

If you think you will be busy during the semester with schoolwork, work, and extracurricular activities, a winter course could help take some stress out of your spring semester.

Improve your GPA

Some courses are easier to take in the winter than during the spring and fall semesters. Winter session is shorter than a regular semester—it only lasts from December 19 to January 10. Since there is a maximum number of credits, you can focus all you effort on one class, instead of four or more.

Get a start on your Minor

You can begin to take classes that are required for a minor. A minor is agreat way for you to supplement your major.

Spend time on JUST ONE CLASS

Winter classes are shorter and focus on a single subject. With the frequent, faster paced, and tighter structure, you can spend your time working on one class.

Flexibility

Most winter classes are online, which allows for flexibility. You can stay at home or travel over the winter and still take a class. There are more than 150 online courses available during winter session.

Get into the classes you need

Take classes that are difficult to get into during the spring and fall, like liberal studies requirements. You can also explore a new course or interest that may not fit into your schedule during the spring semester.

Graduate on time (or sooner)

A winter course will help you graduate on time, if you are a little behind. It can also help speed up your academic progress, and you could graduate early!

Event on campus: Day of the Dead

Need a break from studying?  Want to learn about a different culture? Want to try some great food?

Go to DAY OF THE DEAD here at IUP!!!!

Day of the Dead has been celebrated in Mexico for years and now it is being celebrated here at IUP! Listed below are events being hosted this week.  I encourage you to go and see what it is all about.  I, myself will be going to some of the events and am excited to learn about the history of Day Of The Dead.

October 31 – Exhibit in University Museum: “A Southern Mexico Ofrenda”

• View a traditional southern Mexico home altar and ofrenda.
• Exhibit will include photographs of Dia de los Muertos in Mexico; some photos were taken by IUP professors.
• Runs through November 2, during the museum’s regular hours (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 2-6:30 Thursday: Noon- 7:30   Saturday: Noon- 4) located in Sutton Hall,  Room 111

November 1 – Altars Exhibit

• Susquehanna Room in the HUB. 
• View altars by participating student organizations. Best altar wins a Viewer’s Choice Award.
• The Department of Food and Nutrition will provide samples of traditional Mexican food. Listen to traditional Mexican music.
• Exhibit will be open from 3:30–10:00 p.m.

November 2 – Parade through the Oak Grove, beginning at Fisher Hall, ending at the HUB

• Day of the Dead costume contest and party. Food, DJ, and dancing. People are encouraged to dress as Muertos and Catrinas, but all costumes are welcome.
• Parade starts 5:30 p.m. Costume contest/party is from 6:00–8:00 p.m.

Time to De-Stress!

This year, our Thanksgiving break is November 25-December 1. That’s still a month away!

To keep yourself from burning out and to survive the second half of the semester, take a short break from your academics and have some Halloween fun! 

Here are a few activities on campus next week for you to participate in:

Kennywood Fright Night Trip

When: October 25 from 5pm-1am

Where: HUB

The Black Emphasis Committee and The Entertainment Network present a trip to Kennywood Fright Night on Friday, October 25, at 5:00 p.m. departing from the HUB. Tickets are $25 for valid I-Card holders and can be purchased at the HUB Box Office. Transportation is included. Buses will depart the HUB at 5:00 p.m. and will depart Kennywood at 1:00 a.m.

Boo for Boobies: Hunt for the Cure

When: October 26 from 6pm-6am

Where: Keith and Leonard Halls

The Paranormal Society is supporting breast cancer research with an overnight ghost investigation! Registration tables are in the Library and Oak Grove.  Cost is $10 per session (6-9:30, 10-1:30, 2-5:30), or $25 for the whole night. T-shirts and bracelets are on sale at registration tables. T-shirts: are $12 or 2 for $20. Bracelets: $2. Contact Dr. Laurel Black for more information.

Halls of Horror

When: October 30 from 7-10pm

Where: McCarthy Hall

Halloween Dance

When: October 31 from 9-12pm

Where: Crimson Event Center

Costumes or formal wear is encouraged. This is a masquerade, so you can wear a mask, as long as it is attached to a stick. Come to ASM Aubree and CA Madison’s program on October 28 to decorate your own mask!

IUP Housing 2013-2014

Want to live on campus next year, but not sure how or when to sign up? Read the information below to receive all the answers!

1.       Do you want to live in the same room next year?

YES: Go to step 2

NO: Go to step 3

2.       If you want to live in the same room next year you will log into MYIUP on Monday, Oct. 28-30.  This opens at 8 a.m.!  Click Campus Services and under Housing and Residential Living complete the housing agreement.

3.       If you don’t want to live in the same room next year you can log onto MYIUP on Thursday Oct. 31- Nov. 7 to enter yourself into the Time Slot Assignment Process and you will receive a time slot to sign-up for a different room. To do this click Campus Services and under Housing and Residential Living will be the links to sign-up for a time slot.

Some other tips to make it go easier:

                -have an idea of where you want to live and the room type

                -if you have a roommate you BOTH need to request each other

                -remember to pay the $80.00 to secure your room

This may be confusing at first, but you will be receiving more information from your CA.  If you have any questions you can always go to the housing office located on the ground floor of Ruddock facing Stephenson Hall.
